The Breakfast of Champions - Buenos Aires

I have made it to the Paris of the South, Buenos Aires! I am currently sitting in the America del Sur hostel in San Telmo district trying to eat breakfast. I say trying because the spread is just sugar on top of sugar. Froot loops, toast with dulce de leche (kind of like flavoured condensed milk), sweet drinking yoghurt, and even chocolate cake! Even the coffee out of the pot is sweetened. I made a German friend who laughed at me when I could barely make it through one plate while she was on her third trip to the breakfast bar. What a great country to be a dentist.

As for the trip over, my travels got off to a rushing start before I even left the airport. As I was trying to check in, the Qantas desk people said I couldn't get on the plane without a return flight due to Argentinian visa regulations...and I had 20 minutes to come up with one before check-in closed. Luckily I had my Chromebook and a good data connection to book a cheeky flight back across the Pacific, or my plans would have been cooked before I even started! Qantas you dumpster fire of an airline, thanks for the early warning.

Coming in over Santiago
The flight itself was alright after all the drama. I got enough sleep to avoid most of the jetlag, and i flew on a 747-400 which I had thought were all retired by now. I had a couple of amazing gay men serving my section, whose main solution to problems with the ancient in-seat TV screens was to hit it repeatedly. It worked too! The view of the Andes coming in over Chile was incredible, and that's coming from someone used to seeing New Zealand from the air. My patchy Spanish proved enough to make it through customs and onto a bus to the city.

When I got there, I took a taxi the rest of the way to the hostel. However, the driver had to drop me out because the main road was blocked by a protest, which I had to squeeze past on foot. Reading the signs, I suddenly realised that I had once again found myself in the middle of an education protest! My student activist days will never end.
National Day of Action posters. Better than the NUS posters.

Today I am going on a walking tour of the city then hopefully joining some others for a party night. Hasta luego!
